It is better to copy and paste items to and from the server instead of dragging and dropping. Sometimes dragging and dropping items to the server will corrupt the file.
Directions for accessing the staff.cmcss.net :
A couple of reminders before we get into directions for how to get to your new server:
Inside the CMCSS network, Windows (PC) users can access the server by going to \\staff.cmcss.net\users, their username is cmcss\first.last and password is their email password.
Inside the CMCSS network those using Apple computers will go to smb://staff.cmcss.net/users username is cmcss\first.last and password is their email password.
Purpose of the Staff Server:
(Students do NOT have access to this server.)
On the staff server, teachers can find items that have been shared by academic coaches, consulting teachers, and others in the Sharing folder.
The staff folder contains folders for each teacher in the district.
Now for the file structure or folders remember you will have:
Dropbox - Employee has full access, everyone can add files and can see files but cannot open them unless they are the one that dropped them. Only the owner of the folder or person who dropped the file can delete it. Other users can SEE the file names of things in drop boxes, but they cannot open, modify, remove, or copy the files there.
If another user attempts to access any of the files in your drop box, access will be denied.
Public - Employee has full access, everyone has view access
Private - Employee has full access, everyone else has no access
Websites allows teachers to link documents to their teacher website.

Teachers and students have access to a school server. This is a storage place for you and your students to save projects, documents, and pictures. This server will allow you to access saved documents within the school system.
Elementary School Server Mac- smb;pes/ (use your school acronym) PC- \\pes\(use your school acronym)
Middle School and High School
Mac - smb:acronym/users (delete the word users to see all volumes of the server, including Teachers Only Share)
Windows- \\acronym\users
School Server Structure:
Drop_Box_Faculty and Drop_Box_Student -Faculty member/student has full access, everyone can add files and can see files but cannot open them unless they are the one that dropped them. When students log onto a computer, they are also logging onto the server. To access the server, students will go to the Flag or Start button in the bottom right hand corner. Once they have clicked on this, they will go to computer to access the different folders on the server.
Naming Files and Folders:
Most of the time, any name we give a file or folder works just fine. When we use any server we need to be a bit more careful about naming.
Also, when students turn work in via a drop box, addressing naming conventions can make it much easier to quickly see who has turned in an assignment.
Suggested naming norms:
1. Do not include spaces in file or folder names. Using an underscore creates the look of a space and all computers like it just fine.
Example: 1BakerD_CharSketch
In the example above, the numeral at the beginning denotes class period, followed by the author's last name and first initial. The underscore creates the look of a space and the assignment name follows. This organizes the files in the drop box of the teacher first by class period and then alphabetically and separates multiple assignments alphabetically. Using capital letters at the beginning of the word or abbreviated word simply makes it easier to read and understand, but is not necessary.
